I have created a 48 page booklet which teaches five of the AQA Power and Conflict poems, with a focus on the theme of war. It covers ‘Exposure’, ‘Bayonet Charge’, ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’, ‘War Photographer’, and ‘Remains’.
It works in the following sections:
- A section of background reading for each poem, including tasks which build the skills for language paper 1 Q1 and Q2. Then a linked writing task which supports creative writing for P1Q5.
- Pre-reading tasks, which include context videos and watching an animation of the poem for an initial response.
- Reading the poem and a series of tasks including understanding the narrative, exploring key quotations, picking out patterns in language, matching quotations to key images, thinking about the themes of power and conflict, then a final paragraph.
